CNN analyst Jeff Toobin floats idea that Trump fired prominent US attorney to shut him up

If it’s done by the Trump administration, it must be a conspiracy — at least according to CNN.

The Trump administration fired U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara Saturday as part of its effort to remove all U.S. attorneys that were appointed by President Barack Obama.

The current administration took this step after he refused to tender his resignation Friday, as was requested of all 46 Obama-era U.S. attorneys.

Although this is typically done by all new administrations to ensure loyalty, CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin saw something more sinister behind Bharara’s dismissal.

He admitted that “President Trump had every legal right to fire” the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and that the action “is traditional.”

But “what’s unusual in this situation is that it is really undisputed that President Trump promised Preet Bharara that he could stay on and what’s puzzling is what caused this turnabout, seemingly overnight.”

The CNN legal analyst observed that Bharara’s office was involved in several cases that peripherally involved Trump — including the emails in the possession of former Congressman Anthony Weiner, and speculated that there may be other cases involving the president.

Then Toobin speculated Trump’s motives for firing the U.S. attorney.

“The question arises, is there something either that the Trump administration doesn’t want Preet Bharara to pursue, or are there things he knows that he might disclose later that could be troublesome for the Trump administration,” he said.

But, it wasn’t an “overnight” decision as Toobin suggested. Trump made the promise four months earlier as a favor to Sen. Chuck Schumer, according to The Hill.  Since then, relations between the New York Democrat and the president have declined to the point where Schumer, as Senate minority leader, has repeatedly stonewalled Trump’s cabinet picks.

Schumer complimented Bharara’s drive and dedication and said that “he will be sorely missed.”
