As President Donald Trump continues to wind up his administration to get to the work he was elected to get done, he is reportedly “wooing” key lawmakers on Capitol Hill with a “full-out charm offensive.”
Again proving to be far different from the distant and reserved Barack Obama, Donald Trump is far more hands-on and seemingly down to earth, Washington has discovered. Trump has been inviting lawmakers to the White House for photo ops, handshakes, and bowling at the White House bowling lanes, as Bloomberg Politics reports.
It’s all a “charm offensive” aimed at getting his agenda passed, according to Bloomberg.
Republican Congressman Tom Cole of Oklahoma said Trump talked about how the party needs to “work together,” and went on saying, “He even said at one point, ‘Maybe we should meet once a week. Maybe we should meet every four days!'”
The current debate of the repeal and replacement of Obamacare will feature as a major test of Trump’s amiable approach as the president has come out in favor of the House leadership’s plan.
Kentucky Senator Rand Paul noted that he and his conservative associates are also trying to woo Trump to their way. “I think we’re wooing each other,” Paul said.
But many elected officials have remarked on how gregarious and easy to talk to Donald Trump is.
“He’s great like that. He’s interacting with members. He’s funny,” said Rep. Cole.
“I walked in, and he said, ‘You, you’re great on television. Isn’t this guy great on television? He’s got a face made for television!'” Cole said. Cole also insisted that Trump was fully engaged on the merits of the bills in discussion, “He was on top of it. He was energetic.”
Representative Tom Marino (R, PA) added that on the spur of the moment Trump decided to usher him and some others into the Oval Office to show them around after asking them if they had ever seen the famous office.
Bloomberg also points out that Trump hasn’t been meeting only with lawmakers who are known for siding with him, though. He has also been reaching out directly to members of Congress who have been loudly against his policy ideas.
With all this activity, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham noted that “he’s in deal-making mode.”
