President Donald Trump came to the defense of his Attorney General Jeff Sessions and accused Democrats of having “lost their grip on reality.”
The president responded to Sessions’ announcement that he would recuse himself from the FBI investigation of alleged Russian involvement in the 2016 election.
“Jeff Sessions is an honest man,” Trump said in a statement, “He did not say anything wrong. He could have stated his response more accurately.”

During his confirmation hearing in January, Sessions stated that he did not have communications with the Russians during the election campaign in his response to a question from Sen. Al Franken.  Sessions’ two encounters with Russia’s ambassador to Washington were dismissed as part of his job duties in the Senate Armed Services Committee and as a senator.
The Democratic outcry that Sessions misled the Senate is nothing short of a “witch hunt,” according to Trump.
The “real story,” he concluded, is the leaking of classified and other information.
Fox News Channel’s Charles Krauthammer likened the Sessions situation to that of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
“It’s a cover-up in search of a crime,” Krauthammer said on “Special Report with Bret Baier” Thursday.
Flynn resigned last month after it was revealed that he had not fully disclosed meeting with the Russian envoy before Trump’s inauguration.

Sessions gave a “plausible excuse for his actions” at his press conference, Krauthammer said, adding that “if another shoe drops” in the story, Sessions will have to leave his position.
