The justices of the U.S. Supreme Court did something Tuesday night that they rarely, if ever, have done before at a presidential speech.

Occupying the mind of President Donald Trump is the confirmation of his choice to fill the shoes of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia— U.S. Circuit Court Judge Neil Gorsuch.
It was only fitting that Scalia’s widow, Maureen Scalia, be invited to attend Tuesday night’s presidential address to a joint session of Congress.
And Trump took time to recognize her during his address.
“I am greatly honored to have Maureen Scalia with us in the gallery tonight,” the president said.
She stood, smiled and appeared to hold back tears as seemingly every person in the entire chamber stood and offered her applause — and that’s what was so unusual about that moment.

Both conservatives and liberals were moved by the justices breaking traditional protocol, and were filled with admiration for Scalia.
