In a sure sign of the apocalypse, never-Trumper Bill Kristol actually agreed with President Trump on something.
Kristol, the editor-at-large of the Weekly Standard, told Newsmax host Steve Malzberg that he’s glad Trump is boycotting the White House Correspondents Dinner because he has avoided it for years.
“I myself have been boycotting it for the last 10 years,” Kristol said. “Not really boycotting, I just don’t like it so I decide not to go. So I’m glad to have him on board.”
Kristol echoed the sentiments of many in the media who call the White House press corps a bunch of pretentious, self-important hacks who think they’re celebrities.
“It’s such a ridiculous show, it’s prom for nerds,” Kristol. “Basically you just have everyone dressed up, oohing and aahing at the Hollywood types. There once really was a dinner for White House correspondents to socialize with people who worked in the administration, whom normally you’re seeing in a business context.”
But the event has since devolved into a fluffy social outing that does nothing but cater to the self-aggrandizing media. “The whole thing is staged. It’s a show,” Kristol said. “It’s just not worth it.”
Economist and former Nixon speechwriter Ben Stein agreed. Stein recently blasted CNN and the New York Times for constantly trying to dig up dirt on Trump in order to undermine him. “I don’t blame him for not wanting to go [to the WHCD] and be a punching bag in person,” Stein said.
Besides, this is what happened when Trump went to the WHCD in 2011:
Ben Stein said the relentless over-the-top attacks against Trump by mainstream press have to stop because it all it does is undermine the media’s credibility.
“Every day you pick up the New York Times. Every day they’re slamming, slamming, slamming him,” Stein said. “CNN is slamming him, slamming him, slamming him. They are turning the woods upside down looking for a scandal — and they still haven’t found any real scandals.”
