Pence joins crew to help clean desecrated Jewish cemetery, clearly moved to receive a special gift

Vice President Mike Pence made an unannounced visit Wednesday to a vandalized University City, Missouri Jewish cemetery, where he rolled up his sleeves to help restore the nearly 200 headstones that had been toppled and damaged.

Fox2Now St. Louis reported:

Afterwards, he picked up a handheld loud hailer and addressed the crowd, similar to former President George W. Bush’s address to workers at the site of the toppled twin towers of the World Trade Center after the 9/11 terrorist attack.

“I spoke words earlier today in St. Louis that were from the heart. There is no place in America for hatred, prejudice, or acts of violence, or anti-Semitism. I must tell you that the people of Missouri are inspiring the nation by your love and care for this place and the Jewish community. I want to thank you for that inspiration. For showing the world what America is all about,” Pence said at the Chesed Shel Emeth Society cemetery at the St. Louis suburb.

Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens was also there and assisted with the cleanup and repairs. The governor, who is also Jewish, told the crowd that they would “come together in shared service.” CNN reported:

“Earlier today you should know the president of the United States called me,” Greitens continued. “And he said thank you for showing the people of the world that what happened here the other night is not who America is — it’s not who Missouri is. This is who Missouri is; this is who America is,” he said referring to the people involved in the restoration.

Greitens later tweeted:

The day began with a short prater, recited in Hebrew, followed by everyone getting to work.

Afterwards Pence reported:

Afterwards, one of the men who assisted in the cleanup was so moved by Pence’s gesture and kind words, that he gave the vice president his own yarmulke. Pence, who seemed equally touched gave the man a hug with what looks like nervous Secret Service agent standing close by.

But no matter how much the man was moved by Pence, the haters saw something else.
