Public backlash has George Clooney on defense; claims Trump & Bannon are the true Hollywood elitists

“Irony, thou art truly dead.”

A-list actor George Clooney claimed that he and A-list actress Meryl Streep aren’t Hollywood’s true elitists — but that President Donald Trump and his senior strategist Steve Bannon are.

“When Meryl [Streep] spoke, everyone on that one side said, ‘Well that’s elitist Hollywood speaking,’” Clooney said in an interview with the French cable network Canal+.

Then he attempted to make his case.

“Donald Trump has 22 acting credits in television,” he said, and “Collects $120,000 a year from his Screen Actors Guild pension fund. He is a Hollywood elitist.”

That’s it? Not quite — then he moved on to Bannon.

“Steve Bannon is a failed film writer and director. That’s the truth, that’s what he’s done,” Clooney said with a slight grin. “He wrote a Shakespearean rap musical about the L.A. riots that he couldn’t get made. He made a lot of money off of ‘Seinfeld.’ He’s elitist Hollywood, I mean that’s the reality.”

Clooney bashed Trump’s performance just four weeks into his administration.

“We have a demagogue in the White House. We need the fourth estate, which is journalists, to hold his feet to the fire,” he said.

“They didn’t do a very good job during the campaign,” he said of the press. “And they haven’t done a particularly good job yet. But those things will change.”

Clooney said that having Trump taking over the Oval Office is still “hard to imagine. It still catches in your throat.”

It would seem so, for someone like Clooney who told an international audience in May 2016, that there was no way there will be a President Trump.

And the A-list actor still is making statements devoid of all reality.

“But we’ll fix it,” Clooney said, perhaps believing that getting rid of now-President Trump will put a Democrat in the White House. “We have to.”

If nothing else, Clooney’s appraisal gave folks on Twitter a good chuckle.

And then there was this:

Liberals like Clooney apparently live in a fantasy world where impeaching Trump would make Hillary Clinton president.

Even wacky CNN political commentator Sally Kohn — who should know better — harbored that belief.

But it doesn’t quite work that way. Here’s a little cheat sheet for Kohn and Clooney to help them face reality.

‘This president flat-out lied!’ Tucker joins ‘The Five’ and Bob Beckel goes off on him, see how it ends . .
