Former Canadian Prime Minister serenades Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago

“I apologize in advance.”

That’s what former Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney joked when he serenaded President Trump at a cancer fundraiser last weekend at Mar-a-Lago.

“Mr. President, I hope this doesn’t fracture Canadian-U.S. relations for decades to come. I apologize in advance,” Mulroney said before launching into his rendition of “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.”

Fortunately, Trump gave Mulroney a standing ovation, the Globe and Mail reported. When he returned to his table, President Trump told Mulroney: “Relationships are just great between Canada and the United States. Justin [Trudeau] had a terrific trip down to Washington.”

Mulroney previously sang that same song in 1985 for President Ronald Reagan, with whom he was close. Mulroney was Canada’s prime minister from 1984 to 1993.

President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump both attended the fundraiser, which benefited the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The event raised $2.3 million from its 800 attendees.

Trump has known Brian Mulroney and his wife, Mila, for 25 years because they both own homes in Palm Beach, Florida. The families’ adult children are also longtime friends.

The press was not invited to the fundraiser, so there are few photos of the event on social media.

Hedge fund manager Douglass Kass tweeted a Periscope video of all the evening’s performances, which was headlined by Grammy-winning music producer David Foster.
