An extremely awkward moment unfolded on the “Today” show as Maria Shriver was left speechless by Lena Dunham.
Shriver, who has been guest hosting on the NBC morning show, spoke to Dunham about the final season of her HBO series, “Girls,” politely mentioning that she enjoyed watching the first three episodes.

“You saw a penis, right?” Dunham asked.
“Well, I saw more than that,” Shriver responded, appearing a bit stunned by the remark from the 30-year-old classless creator and star of the controversial series.
“You caught me there for a second. I’m not sure if you’re allowed to say that on television,” an embarrassed Shriver said, “but you did!”
“I won’t be coming back!” Dunham joked, mockingly throwing her hands up. “Going out with a bang!”
“Going out with a bang,” Shriver repeated. “We’re just going out.”
The 61-year-old former First Lady of California turned to host Matt Lauer, who stood off-camera.
Matt, help! She threw me off!” Shriver pleaded, nervously laughing as Dunham apologized.
“That’s the difference between generations,” Shriver told Dunham. “I wasn’t brought up talking like that.”
Dunham, who found it hard to believe Shriver had never said the word “penis” attempted to leave the set, thinking the segment was over. Shriver informed her that she was still on the air as she continued to look to Lauer for help.
“I’m thrilled by what’s just happened here,” Dunham concluded as the awkward segment came to an end.
Viewers had mixed reactions to the exchange on Twitter as some found Dunham’s use of the word “penis” unnecessary while others thought everyone was overreacting.
