Sen. Bernie Sanders found himself in a technical twilight after a joke about CNN being “fake news.”
The Vermont senator’s remark was made while reacting to a report claiming President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, Michael Flynn, discussed Russian sanctions with the country’s ambassador to the U.S. a month before Trump was sworn in.
“This is a very troubling development,” Sanders told CNN’s Erin Burnett on “Outfront” on Friday.
“It speaks to the broader issue of Russia’s involvement in our elections” and “to the issue of President Trump being buddy-buddy with a thug and a murderer,” he said, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Burnett asked if Trump was telling the truth when he told reporters he had not seen the report, as a video clip was played with the president’s response.
“Well, I don’t know. Maybe he was watching CNN fake news,” Sanders said. “What do you think?”
Burnett smiled and appeared to laugh as Sanders added, “It was a joke.”
The CNN anchor replied that she knew he was joking and repeated her question.
“Erin?” Sanders asked. “Are we on?”
The technical problem persisted, however, and the network cut to a commercial break. When the program returned, the connection to Sanders had been restored and Burnett apologized for the “technical issue” as she went ahead with the interview.
