She’s had it coming for a long time — and she got it from both barrels.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren was reprimanded at Tuesday night’s debate on the nomination of Sen. Jeff Sessions for the post of attorney general.
During the Massachusetts Democrat’s diatribe against the Alabama Republican, she began quoting former Sen. Ted Kennedy and Coretta Scott King, wife of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
At that point, she was stopped by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
“The senator has impugned the motives and conduct of our colleague from Alabama as warned from the chair,” the Kentucky Republican said. “Sen. Warren, quote, said ‘Sen. Sessions, has used the awesome power of his office to chill the free exercise of the vote by black citizens.’ I call the senator to order under the provisions of [Senate] Rule 19.”
Rule 19 provides that:
No Senator in debate shall, directly or indirectly, by any form of words impute to another Senator or to other Senators any conduct or motive unworthy or unbecoming a Senator.
Sen. Steve Daines, R-Montana, who was serving as chairman during the proceedings, had previously warned Warren.
“I am surprised that the words of Coretta Scott King are not suitable for debate in the United States Senate,” she shot back. “I ask leave of the Senate to continue my remarks.”
After Warren completed her remarks, Sen. Orrin Hatch rose and gave her the second barrel, condemning her “constant diatribe,” which served only to create more rancor in the Senate.

“I listened to her for quite a while and she didn’t have a good thing to say about a fellow senator here, and I frankly don’t think that’s right,” the Utah Republican said of Warren. “If we don’t respect each other, we’re going down a very steep path to oblivion.”
Hatch said that although he has differed with Sessions in the past on a number of issues, “I would never say things about him like have been said by my colleagues on the other side.”
After being reprimanded and silenced on the Senate floor, Warren continued her rant on Twitter.

I will not be silent about a nominee for AG who has made derogatory & racist comments that have no place in our justice system.

I will not be silent while the Republicans rubber stamp an AG who will never stand up to the @POTUS when he breaks the law.

NAACP president Cornell Brooks spoke vigorously against Sessions’ nomination in January. However, this week a long-forgotten award from the Alabama chapter of the NAACP was discovered when clearing out his Mobile office in preparation to become attorney general — its “Governmental Award of Excellence.”
This prompted remarks by Sen. Lindsey Graham on the Senate floor Tuesday Afternoon.
“Apparently [Brooks] doesn’t stay in contact with the NAACP chapter in Alabama,” the South Carolina Republican said, according to Politico. “Most of the things said about Jeff Sessions and the way he acted as a senator could be said about almost all of us on this side who consider themselves conservative.”
