President Donald Trump is continuing to clean out Barack Obama’s appointees to ready the U.S. government for new policies, and one of the lastest was the dismissal the U.S. Border Patrol chief who has many times in the past announced his support for Obama’s pro-illegal immigration ideals.
Only days after Trump took the oath of office, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security asked U.S. Border Patrol Chief Mark Morgan to step down from his role as head of the Border Patrol. The chief did so and even noted on one of his last conference calls that he was asked to resign and he did not quit.
Morgan’s tenure at Border Patrol has been controversial for his deep-seated support of President Obama’s immigration policies such as sanctuary cities and a desire to ignore illegal immigration. Indeed, his own rank and file agents stood against his kowtowing to Obama’s soft immigration policies and had recently published an editorial at Breitbart News expressing criticism of his leadership.
In the editorial by the executive board of the National Border Patrol Council, Morgan was called a “disgrace.” And to drive the point home, the editorial ended declaring, “Morgan — a handpicked Obama Administration official — does not have the will necessary to secure the border for the citizens and legal residents of this country.”
Morgan also angered his agents when he seemed to agree with the idea of blanket amnesty for illegals in comments made before a Senate Committee last year. The Border Patrol chief later insisted his comments were taken out of context and that he did not support amnesty.
Obama picked Morgan from outside the Patrol, too, another thing that made Border Patrol agents wary of him. Morgan came from the FBI and had no experience in immigration or border policy before taking his place as the leader of the agency tasked with securing our borders.
In fact, Morgan was the first chief who came from outside the U.S. Border Patrol since its founding in 1924, the Daily Mail reports.
While Morgan’s firing is a needed change for those who value national security, it is not all that unusual.
It is not uncommon for presidents to replace leaders of departments after taking their seat in the White House. In fact, once a new president takes the oath of office, an immediate resignation is required of many agency heads because all of them serve at the pleasure of the chief executive. It is up to the incoming administration to either accept those resignations and replace those who offered them or allow them to stay in their positions.
