The confirmation hearing for former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who was tapped to be the next Secretary of Energy, took an awkward turn during an exchange with U.S. Sen. Al Franken.
After Franken thanked Perry for visiting with him in his office, he asked, “Did you enjoy meeting me?”
“I hope you are as much fun on that dais as you were on your couch,” Perry replied to the Minnesota Democrat.
Perry was quick to rethink the answer as the hearing room broke out in laughter.
“May I rephrase that, sir?” he quickly said, with a chuckle.
“Please,” Franken responded. “Please, please. Oh, my lord.”
Beside himself with laughter by this point, Perry quipped, “Well, I think we found our ‘Saturday Night Live’ soundbite.”
Franken was a writer and performer on the NBC program before he began playing the role of a U.S. senator.
