Trump touts ‘big stuff’: Walmart, Bayer, other major companies announce more American jobs

Major companies continued to announce the creation of more American jobs in anticipation of a Donald Trump administration.

Wal-Mart is looking to create 10,000 U.S. jobs in 2017, the company announced Tuesday, according to Market Watch. Previously planned store openings, store expansions and new e-commerce services will be the source of the new jobs as well as supporting an additional 24,000 construction jobs.

Amazon announced last week that plans are already in the works that would create 100,000 full-time jobs in the U.S. in the next 18 months.

The nod to the president-elect by the companies was acknowledged by Trump in tweets thanking them for efforts to create U.S. jobs.

Bayer AG has pledged to Trump that it will invest $8 billion in American research and development as it moves forward to acquire Monsanto.

According to The Hill:

Incoming White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters that Bayer will also protect all of Monsanto’s 9,000 American jobs while creating an additional 3,000 high-tech positions in the country. That agreement, he added, came after Trump met with CEOs from both companies last week.

In September, Bayer won shareholder approval for a $66 billion offer to buy seeds giant Monsanto, believed to be the largest all-cash company purchase ever. But the deal still faces regulatory hurdles in multiple countries, including in the United States.

The president-elect has pointed to these and other efforts by companies to add American jobs as a sign of their confidence in his incoming administration. He has often taken credit for seeming to negotiate the decisions by the companies.

“This new domestic expansion has not been broadcast anywhere previously,” Spicer said, according to the The Hill.

“The reason for this commitment and expansion is because of the president-elect’s focus on creating a better business climate here in the United States, which has already increased consumer small biz confidence since the election,” he said.

Trump blasted NBC News on Wednesday for its “Fake News” following an article published Tuesday from Ben Popken which reported that some company job announcements were not connected to Trump at all.

Though the media may be critical of Trump’s attempts to take credit for  jobs being created, it appears that  the positive economic developments that foster job growth have been put into motion with his incoming presidency.
