Here’s what happened to the petition to keep Mormon Tabernacle Choir from singing at inauguration

DC NEWSBy Phillip Stucky, DCNF

Republican President-elect Donald Trump has announced the Mormon Tabernacle Choir will perform at the inauguration on Jan. 20, and a petition is already gaining steam to stop the group from performing.

The petition started Friday with 6,500 signatures, and the motion currently has 9,135 signatures from voters who don’t want the choir affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints to perform at the event — a move that some see as a tacit endorsement of the president-elect.

“We, as signers of this petition, believe that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints decision to allow the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to perform at the upcoming presidential inauguration of Donald Trump DOES NOT reflect the values of Mormonism and does not represent its diverse 15+ million members worldwide,” the petition asserts.

“We also believe that an official LDS organization performing at a presidential inauguration gives the perception that the LDS Church and its diverse 15+ million members worldwide support an incoming president’s agenda, values and behaviors,” the petition argued, adding that participation in other political events like the 4th of July celebration were acceptable due to the nonpartisan nature.

The Rockettes are slated to perform at the inauguration, but several Rockettes protested the idea once it was made public Friday, casting doubt on whether or not the group will actually perform. The group’s leadership said that it was still up for debate, leaving the possibility open for the Rockettes to bow out of their performance.
