Former House Speaker and Trump transition team vice chair Newt Gingrich, no fan of Mitt Romney, said he would nonetheless support the former Massachusetts governor as secretary of state under one condition — if the president-elect nominates him to that position.
“I’m very comfortable, if given the amount of time he’s given to this, if President-elect Trump says ‘I want Romney’ then I’m for Romney,” he told CBS News host John Dickerson on “Face the Nation” Sunday.
“He has spent more than enough time talking with Mitt,” he added. “And we have had good occasion in accepting the call from Taiwan to understand that President Trump is going to be his own leader in foreign policy and he’s looking for somebody who is going to be his secretary of state — not the State Department’s.”
He reiterated, “If he concludes Romney can do the job best, them I’m for Romney.”
That is a far cry, from his opinion that Romney should be Trump’s last choice for secretary of state a mere two weeks ago.
“I can think of 20 other people who would be more naturally compatible with the Trump vision of foreign policy,” the former House speaker said on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”
