If Bill O’Reilly were a betting man . . .
Speculation is mounting on whether President Obama will issue a pardon for U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl before he leaves office.
Fox News host Bill O’Reilly strongly believes that a pardon is coming for the soldier, who was captured during the Afghanistan War and held hostage by the Taliban for five years.
With a trial date delayed multiple times, the next pre-trial hearing is set for December in the desertion case of Bergdahl who allegedly abandoned his Army outpost in Afghanistan before being captured by the militant group in 2009. Obama exchanged five Guantánamo Bay prisoners for his return in 2014.
O’Reilly remarked on Tuesday’s “The O’Reilly Factor” that Obama feels Bergdahl is not responsible for his actions because he was “out there” and not “emotionally equipped” to serve, and the Army “made a mistake even putting the man in the field.”  O’Reilly cited a New York Times editorial calling for a pardon for the sergeant because “Bergdahl had pre-existing mental health problems when the Army granted him a waiver to enlist.”
Fox News anchor and legal analyst Kimberly Guilfoyle agreed, adding that a pardon from Obama would effectively “protect the record” in the case and prevent access to information in the future.
Legal analyst Lis Wiehl disagreed with her colleagues, arguing that Obama has “more respect for the process.”
Bergdahl initially came home to a hero’s welcome, but details of the exchange and the stories told by the men he deserted and who risked their lives to find him eventually painted a different picture. If he is not pardoned, he will face court-martial trial under incoming President Trump, who was highly critical of the soldier, calling him a “traitor” throughout the presidential election campaign.
With disagreeing predictions on the possibility of a pardon, O’Reilly asked if there was “money on the table,” joking about betting on Obama’s actions. “No there’s no money on the table!” Wiehl laughed. “Gambling is illegal.”
Twitter users were not happy with the prospect O’Reilly offered and weighed in on the possibility of a pardon.
