Is Nancy Pelosi in or out? House Democrats take secret vote today

Is Nancy Pelosi in or out?

Rep. Pelosi (D-Calif.) — who has led House Democrats since 2002 — won a secret ballot vote to retain the top spot, by a vote of 134 to 63.

But the mere fact that she was publicly questioned and challenged spotlights the turmoil the Democratic Party is in.

Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan, who lost to Pelosi, said she had her time in the sun, but she should’ve bowed out to make room for new leadership.

Tensions have been brewing inside the party ever since Democrats lost control of the lower chamber in 2010, the Hill reported. “The level of frustration in our caucus is as great as I have seen it,” Ryan said.

Before the election, Pelosi had confidently predicted that Hillary Clinton would win the presidency, and Democrats would pick up 25 seats. In a shocking turn of events, Donald Trump won the Electoral College, and Republicans won control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

After Trump totally reshaped the electoral map, it was clear to some that the Democrats are no longer a national party.

“We’re at the point now where we are not even a national party at this point,” Ryan told MSNBC. “We have some support on the coast, but we lost the support of Middle America.”

Indeed, Trump’s message to “Drain the Swamp” of oligarchical career politicians like Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and the Bush dynasty inspired millions of white, working-class voters to the polls.

Massachusetts Congressman Seth Moulton said American voters have sent Democrats a “clear message” that they must change after the “horrific” election results

“We lost the White House, the Senate,” said Moulton. “We only have 16 governorships across the country, and we don’t have a majority of the state legislatures, so the American people have sent a clear message to us Democrats that the status quo is not acceptable.”

Congressman Tim Ryan agreed, saying you can’t get different results doing the same thing over and over again.

“We have got to have the right messenger,” Ryan said. “We have got to have someone who cannot just go on MSNBC, but go on Fox and Fox Business and CNBC and go into union halls and fish fries and churches all over the country and start a brush fire about what a new Democratic Party looks like.”

Thanks to Pelosi’s re-election, it appears Trump will easily win a second term and both houses of Congress will remain under GOP control.
