Mitt Romney may need to clean up some past business with Donald Trump if he is seriously considering the position of secretary of state.
The former Massachusetts governor may be preparing a public apology for his attacks against Trump during the election campaign, Trump transition team sources told Fox News’ Ed Henry.
Trump met with Romney last week, supposedly to speak about heading the Department of State. While no official announcement has been made, many Trump supporters were less than enthusiastic about the possibility of the former 2012 Republican presidential nominee having any role in a Trump administration.
Newt Gingrich was critical of the choice, saying he could “think of 20 other people” who were better choices and former GOP candidate Mike Huckabee believed Romney could not even consider the position without offering an apology for the personal attacks on Trump’s character.
The possible apology indicates that “Romney may be a much more serious contender for secretary of state than a lot of people assumed,” Fox News’ Henry said Thursday on “Special Report.” If Romney wasn’t a real possibility, Henry noted, he “wouldn’t even be considering an apology. It wouldn’t even be broached by anybody.”
