Nikki Haley gets picked for UN ambassador; ‘forgiving’ Trump confuses his supporters

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will be the first woman officially named to President-elect Donald Trump‘s new administration team.

Haley was chosen to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Fox News reported Wednesday in a move that may ruffle the feathers of staunch Trump supporters.

Trump’s choice is surprising considering that Haley was an outspoken critic of the GOP presidential nominee throughout much of the campaign, backing Florida Sen. Marco Rubio in the Republican primaries and later supporting Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

If confirmed, Haley would be the first woman and, as an Indian American, the first minority to be appointed to a senior position in Trump’s administration. Currently serving her second term as governor, she would be succeeded by Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster who endorsed Trump before the state’s Republican primary in February, Fox reported.

Trump may risk raising the ire of his supporters with Haley’s selection especially as it comes on the heels of reports that he is considering former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for the secretary of state position. A very vocal “Never-Trump” critic during the campaign, Romney’s support from the GOP establishment that Trump campaigned against could set off those who voted for him as an outsider.

The president-elect also made an abrupt about-face on his campaign promise to prosecute former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, after months of calling her “crooked.”  Not following through on the promise to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Clinton shook supporters who regularly chanted “lock her up” at rallies throughout the campaign.

Trump supporters who catapulted him to an election victory may not be happy with the president-elect’s more forgiving tone.

Will Trump voters go along with this more conciliatory president-elect or will they demand a return of the alpha that they voted for?
