Obama joins calls for ‘curators’ to filter ‘fake news’: Sharyl Attkisson asks the painfully obvious questions

At a German press conference, President Barack Obama took up a new cause in fake news stories and “active misinformation” being spread by online news outlets, and called for a curator to act as an arbiter to filter the bad from the good.

This was in apparent reaction and agreement to Melissa Zimdars, a liberal assistant professor who published — then took down — a bogus list of what she adjudged were fake news sources.

“It was on the subject of false information coursing through social media and television that Mr. Obama was most impassioned,” The New York Times reported.

In response, award-Winning investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson asks the obvious question: Who’s to decide what news is fake and which is real, and more importantly, why should we trust that group or person?

Then she delivered her knock-out punch.

Indeed, the notion shielding opposing views from the public was the very thing the founders addressed in the First Amendment. Opposing views and speech — especially political speech, is sacred and it’s up to the public — not a central curator — to determine what is good and what is bad.

And talk about fake news stories, the presidential election was replete with them, as Attkisson observed.

She observed that it was as though the media were being fed the same lines and they dutifully reported ids as real news.

Even CBS News has turned its back on the high broadcast news standards established by such luminaries as Edward R. Murrow. Most recently it accused Washington Free Beacon journalist Stephen Gutowski of being a member of the “alt-right,” a term given to that group of ultra-right individuals who have rejected mainstream conservative values.

Why would CBS News make up such a claim? Is it because Gutowski was the reporter who revealed that former CBS News darling Katie Couric engaged in deceptive editing to make her own point on gun violence?

Whatever the reason, CBs’s “news” was news to Gutowski.

Appointing a fake/real news story curator would be akin to establishing a state news agency, where the only news that reaches the public is that which the state deems credible and newsworthy.

The American people have proven themselves capable of separating the wheat from the chaff for well-over 200 years and can continue to do so — except for those who choose to live life in a bubble.
