President-elect Trump & Speaker Ryan sit down for a ‘very good’ meeting: Plan to ‘hit the ground running’

Laying aside their past differences,  House Speaker Paul Ryan and President-elect Donald Trump met in Washington to chart plans for a conservative GOP agenda.

Ryan welcomed Trump along with his wife Melania and Vice President-elect Mike Pence to Capitol Hill on Thursday, enjoyed lunch and took a tour before a meeting in the speaker’s office.

Ryan told reporters afterwards that they had “a fantastic, productive meeting” in which they discussed how “we’re going to hit the ground running” and, borrowing Trump’s phrase, said they would “make America great again.”

“We’re going to do some absolutely spectacular things for the American people,” Trump said.

“We can’t get started fast enough. And whether its health care or immigration, so many different things, we will be working on them very rapidly,” he said, adding that they had a “very good, very detailed meeting.”

The speaker, who had sometimes been openly critical of Trump during the campaign, showed the president-elect where he will be sworn in as the 45th president of the United States in January.

Ryan later told Fox News in an exclusive interview that he was looking forward to working with Trump, the first Republican since 1984 to win the speaker’s home state of Wisconsin.

“Being in Congress without having the White House has been extremely frustrating because we haven’t been able to get things done,” he told Bret Baier on “Special Report” on Thursday. “We have a unified Republican government. We can actually get things done for the people of this country. We now have that.”

Despite their past rocky relationship, Ryan credited Trump for helping to unify the GOP in the end.

“Donald Trump heard something out there in America that no one else heard. He heard and he saw a movement out there,” Ryan said. “He pulled off one of the most impressive political feats I have seen in my lifetime. Donald Trump deserves all that credit.”
