One of President Obama’s last acts before leaving office could be issuing a pardon for Hillary Clinton.
The White House did not rule out the possibility of a blanket pardon for the former Democratic presidential nominee who has not had any charges pressed against her, saving her from future prosecution over her email server.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest sidestepped a question about President-elect Donald Trump’s remarks during the campaign that he intended to appoint a special prosecutor to examine the former secretary of state’s emails if he was elected.
“As you know, the president has offered clemency to a substantial number of Americans who were previously serving time in federal prisons, and we didn’t talk in advance about the president’s plans to offer clemency to any of those individuals,” Earnest said Wednesday.
“We don’t talk about the president’s thinking… with respect to any particular cases that may apply to any pardons or commutations,” he added.

The FBI investigation of Clinton’s private email server is over, with the recommendation that no charges be brought against her coming just before Election Day. However, the agency is still reportedly investigating the Clinton Foundation for corruption.
Earnest noted Trump’s victory speech indicated he could drop the matter once he takes office in January.
“What I would direct your attention to, though, is the president’s observation that he made in the Rose Garden about the tone that President-elect Trump displayed in his remarks last night, and that tone is consistent with the longstanding traditions of our democracy,” he said. “That’s relevant because we’ve got a long tradition in this country of people in power not using the criminal justice system to exact political revenge. In fact, we go to great lengths to insulate our justice system from partisan politics.”
