Bernie Sanders might be campaigning for Hillary Clinton, but he doesn’t endorse everything she says.
In a move that some have called “going rogue,” Sanders dialed back on Clinton’s heavy criticism of Trump supporters, saying he does not believe they’re all racist or sexist.
“I do not believe that most of the people who are thinking about voting for Mr. Trump are racist or sexist,” Sanders tweeted Saturday.
“Some are, but I think most are people who are hurting, they’re worried about their kids, they’re working longer hours for lower wages.”
Sanders said instead of alienating Trump supporters, the Democratic party should try to embrace them.
“Our job is to reach out to Trump voters to tell them that we’re going to create an economy that works for all of us, not just a few,” he said.
Later in the day, Sanders said he believes Trump is “running his campaign on bigotry,” but stood by his remarks that Trump supporters are not all bad people.
Sanders’ diplomat stance was a stark contrast to an absurd generalization Clinton made in September that millions of Trump supporters are racist, sexist xenophobes who belong in a “basket of deplorables.”

“You can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables,” Clinton said during a speech in New York.
“Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that and he has lifted them up.”
Clinton later offered a half-hearted apology, but the damage was done, as millions of Americans were offended that Hillary accused them of being racist and sexist simply for supporting her opponent.
