A dying man’s vote in probably his last presidential election may not get counted after all.
Thomas Korinko, described as a “diehard patriot” has been declining in health from a diagnosis seven months ago of liver cancer, Fox 35 News reported.
The 76 year-old Florida man voted by mail last week as he could no longer make it in person to a voting booth. Currently at a hospice center in Tavares, Korinko was expected to pass away on Wednesday.
But the Lake County Supervisor of Elections Office has asked for verification of the man’s signature since the now shaky, frail signature did not match his voter registration signature, Fox 35 reported.
“This is not voter fraud. He’s a registered, lawful, Florida voter,” his son Jeff Korinko told Fox 35. “This is his ballot, you have it, please count it. I was told, ‘No.'”
Turning in a new signature and photo ID to the Elections Office by 5 p.m. the Monday before Election Day will resolve the problem. But Korinko, has been on and off morphine, and his physical state has declined to the point that he is unable to sign the affidavit.
“To be disenfranchised in that manner, that can’t be what’s in the best interest of the law,” his son said.
The Lake County Supervisor of Elections told Fox 35 that a county canvassing board would make the final determination in Korinko’s case.
“I’m all cried out,” Jeff Korinko said. “Cried earlier today. This was really important to my father. This was really important to my father.”
