‘Just say no to Starbucks’ – New ‘unity cup’ unleashes the fury

A new green “unity” cup caused many to see red as Starbucks launched its new coffee packaging just days before the election.

Starbucks unveiled the green cup on Tuesday with a design meant to symbolize unity but ended up unleashing a firestorm of criticism instead.

The green cup features a piece of artwork created by Shogo Ota which depicts more than 100 figures, from a coffee farmer, a family and friends, all drawn in a mosaic made of one continuous pen stroke.

“The green cup and the design represent the connections Starbucks has as a community with its partners (employees) and customers. During a divisive time in our country, Starbucks wanted to create a symbol of unity as a reminder of our shared values, and the need to be good to each other,” said Howard Schultz, chairman and ceo of the coffeehouse chain.

No stranger to fanning the political fires, the company set off a wave of backlash on social media as many blasted Starbucks for “political brainwashing” and for its “liberal bias.”

The very liberal coffee chain has openly spouted its left-leaning agenda, with anti-Second Amendment, gun-free zones in their stores and campaigns on race relations. CEO Schultz supported President Obama in both 2008 and 2012.

The company, which has been slammed for attacking Christian values, did not indicate that the green cups would replace their annual holiday packaging. Starbucks’ 2015 all-red cups caused controversy last year  for eliminating any mention of Christmas during the holiday season.

Whatever it claims its intentions are with the new green cup, Starbucks ignited a firestorm on social media in just the first few hours of its release.

What do you think – is the Starbucks green cup promoting “unity” a good idea, bad idea or “just a cup”?
