Hillary Clinton, the champion of equal pay for women and America’s first female presidential nominee, seems to be guilty of a massive gender pay gap at the Clinton Foundation.
Researchers at the Clinton campaign warned last year about “huge discrepancies” between the pay of men and women at the charity, according to hacked emails released by Wikileaks, The Daily Caller reported.
“Given the story yesterday about pay equity at the State Department, I wanted to flag something that came out of our research on pay equity at the Foundation,” Ian Mandel, a future Clinton campaign staffer, wrote in a 2015 email. “There are huge discrepancies, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they went here next.”
Mandel forwarded research by Karuna Seshasai, another future staffer for the campaign, to Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook and campaign’s research director, Tony Clarrk.
Seshasai analyzed Clinton Foundation pay following reports of a gender pay gap at Clinton’s Senate office.
“Essentially here are the key take aways: 3 out of the 11 highest paid employees of the Foundation are women,” Seshasai wrote in a Feb. 24, 2015 email released by Wikileaks on Tuesday.
“Avg salary of the highest paid men is $294,157.50, while the avg salary of the highest paid women is $181,576.66 ($112K difference),” she wrote. “Median salary of the highest paid men is $346,106, while the median salary of the highest paid women is $185,386 ($190K difference).”
According to The Daily Caller:
The hefty pay gap at the foundation did not make the news until this year, when The Daily Caller News Foundation’s Richard Pollock laid out the stats.
Pollock cited Clinton’s remarks at an “Equal Pay Day” speech she gave in April.
“I feel like [equal pay] is something that’s long overdue,” she said. “It is way past time to end the outrage of so many women still earning less than men on the job.”
A gender pay gap has been called “workplace discrimination” by the Clinton campaign.
“Women earn less than men across our economy — and women of color often lose out the most,” the campaign website states. “Hillary will promote pay transparency across the economy and work to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act — a bill she introduced as senator — to give women the tools they need to fight workplace discrimination.”
