First lady Michelle Obama gave former President George W. Bush a hug at the Saturday opening ceremony of the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of African-American History and Culture.
Although Bush didn’t return the hug, he smiled and placed his head on her shoulder as he continued clapping.
Was this meant as a political statement — six weeks before the presidential election during a particularly vindictive campaign being waged on both sides?
Another hug that was seen around the world and remembered at the 2012 presidential election was the one shared by President Obama and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
Along those same lines, was the hug intended as a “thank you” for the rumor that Bush’s father may vote for Hillary Clinton on November 8, along with a suggestion that the junior Bush may come over to the dark side also?
President Gerald Ford’s White House photographer David Hume Kennerly was at the event and snapped off this photo:

On the surface many thought it a sweet moment.

But underneath it all what do Bush and the current first lady have in common? — about as much as Christie and Obama had in common in the summer of 2012.
