Obama hosts South By South Lawn Music Festival and you’re probably not invited

President Barack Obama will host the first ever South by South Lawn music, art and ideas festival this fall, which was inspired by Austin’s famous South by Southwest festival.

South by South Lawn (SXSL) “will bring together creators, innovators, and organizers who work day in and day out to improve the lives of their fellow Americans and people around the world,” the White House announced Thursday.

“October 3, the White House will convene creators, innovators, and organizers from across the country for an evening of music, film, and great ideas,” the announcement says of the festival, which will be co-hosted by South by Southwest.

For those interested in attending the event, the White House invites nominations for people “creating change — big or small” in their community. The nomination form includes a field for an Instagram handle.

The event is “a call to arms for every American to roll up their sleeves and make a positive mark on our country — and a celebration of the great work so many of us have already accomplished.”

Like SXSW, South by South Lawn will feature musical acts by “emerging artists” as well as better known performers. The White House’s festival also combines the 3rd annual White House Student Film Festival, co-sponsored by the American Film Institute.

And it wouldn’t be south-by without panel discussions with “influencers who are using their platforms to bring about positive change” that “will explore topics like how to make change stick.”

Obama will have no problem finding amazing celebrities and influencers to join his “festival of ideas, art, and action.” Kendrick Lamar and Usher both performed at the president’s 50th birthday party in August, and First Lady Michelle Obama is good friends with Beyoncé.
