School sends parents Pledge of Allegiance waiver; you can imagine how that’s going over

The new school year is only a week old in Florida, but one school is already upsetting parents over a request to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Killearn Lakes Elementary School in Tallahassee sent home a “Pledge of Allegiance request” for parents to sign and return if they wanted their child to be excused from reciting the pledge. An image of the form was shared on Facebook last Thursday by Micah Brienen, who said his niece brought the request home.

“My niece brought this home from school today…What is happening to our country?!?” Brienen wrote.

The form states: “I understand my rights as a parent and I request that my child, noted above, be excused from reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This request includes standing and placing his/her right hand over his/her heart.”

Brienen’s posted photo included his sister-in-law’s written reply on the form: “This is the dumbest thing I have ever read and I am so ashamed of this.”

A few days after the initial post, Brienen followed up with the contact information for the school and Leon County Superintendent of Education Jackie Pons, who is up for re-election.

On Tuesday, Brienen updated his Facebook page with the news that the request had been removed from student handbooks across the district.

“They’ve torn it out of every handbook. Per an edict that came down from the district last night. We can make a difference! Let’s save America together!!” he wrote.

Most of the responses to Brienen’s post were supportive, including one by his father Randy:

“I am proud of my daughter in law for her response and my son for bringing it to attention on fb. We live in a very different country that my grandfather and father served in the miltary for. They would hang their heads in shame. As do I.”

One person commented, “Scary thing is, it probably won’t be long before that type of ridiculousness is everywhere,” and another wrote “8 years of Obama and a Congress that has done zero to stop him.”

Brienen shared in one of his comments that he was “shocked” by the waiver.

Just because it’s a law, doesn’t make it right. Laws are passed all the time where people are unaware. My hope is that this post brings attention to people so that maybe the same policy to send out the waivers doesn’t pass in another state. Sadly, our American values and traditions are whittling away…What’s next? No American flags in schools?? Will future Presidents (Republican or Democrat) be forced to quit saying “God Bless America” at the end of his/her speeches?

Brienen ended his comment with a challenge.

“And for those few ignorants that believe wars are fought for the right to protest the pledge, I’d like to see those people go to a VFW or American Legion meeting and when the pledge is started, stand up and tell them that….good luck with that.”
