Louisiana gov wants to praise Trump, but he has to get past CNN first: ‘You mischaracterized what I said’

Although Louisiana’s governor — a Democrat — had reportedly dismissed Donald Trump’s visit Friday to the flood-stricken Pelican State as a “photo op,” he’s singing a different tune now.

Gov. John Bel Edwards told CNN’s Dana Bash Sunday that previous reports that he was critical of the visit were mischaracterized.

Bash observed that former Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu. another Democrat, thanked Trump for visiting the flood damaged areas in the state.

Not only did Landrieu praise Trump, but she also blasted both President Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Bash then threw the question out to Edwards.

“why is she wrong?” Bash asked.

“She’s not,” he shot back.

“You mischaracterized what I said,” he continued. “I didn’t dismiss this as a photo-op. I said before he came down, we welcome him here. We want him to be helpful and hope it didn’t turn into a mere photo-op.”

Edwards said that the visit by the Republican presidential nominee and his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, helped to “shine a spotlight” on the destruction the flood brought to his state.

“I also appreciated the good phone call — the conversation I had with Gov. Pence, who was sincere and genuine when he called,” Edwards told Bash. “We spoke for a long time on Friday morning about their desire to be helpful.”

Trump and Pence rolled into Baton Rouge with an 18-wheeler full of much-needed supplies and handed them out to the flood-stricken residents, while President Obama played golf, took in the nightlife and enjoyed the fireworks on Martha’s Vineyard.

In addition to the trailer-load of supplied, Trump donated $100,000 to the Greenwell Springs Baptist Church where he visited.
