Trump gets a lot of heat for his ‘freedom of the press’ stand, but he clears it up in one tweet

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has been criticized in the past for suggesting that freedom of the press as guaranteed by the First Amendment should be curtailed, but on Sunday he defined what he’d meant by his earlier remarks.

Trump tweeted Sunday afternoon that First Amendment rights shouldn’t protect reporters who publish false news stories.

He added that his fight throughout the campaign has been not only with his rivals for office but also with what he termed was a “dishonest and corrupt media.”

Then Trump offered examples of the media’s dishonest reporting.

Trump tweeted that the Democratic presidential nominee enjoys continued protection by the mainstream media — a charge lodged by conservatives for years.

He then attributed his falling poll number to a “disgusting and corrupt media.”

Trump’s latest press battle was with The New York Times in response to an article it ran Saturday headlined, “Inside the Failing Mission to Tame Donald Trump’s Tongue.”

“He veers from barking at members of his staff to grumbling about how he was better off following his own instincts during the primaries and suggesting he should not have heeded their calls for change,” the article claimed.

Trump fought back — by turning to his go-to social media — Twitter.
