Oh No! Global warming threatens to kill Olympic athletes. According to Newsweek, anyway

Olympic athletes in Rio apparently are facing serious threats to their performance — and their lives, thanks to global warming.

Besides the sewage water issues, Newsweek reported  Olympians also are at risk from the effects of climate change with hot temperatures and air pollution.

According to Newsweek, in a story first published by Grist:

Already, marathon times are 2 minutes slower on average for every 10 degree Fahrenheit that temperature rises. In Rio, the problems are even more pronounced, because poor air quality from vehicle congestion makes high-performance outdoor sports difficult — even deadly. Each year, thousands of Rio’s citizens die from complications of air pollution, which is tied to lung cancer, heart attacks, strokes, and asthma.

Before the commencement of the official games, a race walking competition was reportedly affected by the climate issues. Heat-related injuries were sustained by 11 out of 18 competitors and one athlete passed out.

Not everyone was so quick to buy into the deadly climate change theory.
