Clint Eastwood‘s recent defense of Donald Trump has left his fellow Hollywood star Meryl Streep a bit stunned.
When the actress learned that Eastwood would support the Republican presidential nominee over Democrat Hillary Clinton, Streep was “shocked.”
“I didn’t know that,” Streep said in an interview published by Variety on Monday. “I’ll have to speak to him. I’ll have to correct that!”
Eastwood had said he would “have to go for Trump” last week if the only choice was between Clinton and Trump.
Streep, who co-starred with Eastwood in the 1995 film “The Bridges of Madison County,” supports the Democratic presidential nominee and even spoke at the Democratic National Convention.
“I’m shocked. I really am,” she said of Eastwood’s remarks. “Because he’s more — I would have thought he would be more sensitive than that.”
The 67 year-old actress believes voters will turn to Clinton in the general election, despite others who may echo Eastwood’s sentiments.
“I think there is a reckoning,” she said. “People will go — or their wives will go — ‘You know what? This is crazy. It’s too tricky. We’re not going to gamble with our children’s future.’”
