The fighters squared off, the spark was lit, and it was off to the races for a large group of Walmart shoppers in New York over the Independence Day weekend. But in a sane world what caused the massive, 30-person brawl would be totally ridiculous.
With baseball bats swinging, trash cans thrown, and cans of food flying, up to 30 people squared off in the front entrance of a Gates, New York, Walmart bringing police and, naturally, cell phones to record the melee.
Police later learned the incident was apparently sparked when some teens began to make fun of a woman’s dress and began to taunt her and take cell phone video of her in the store, WHEC TV reported.
The object of ridicule soon enlisted the aide of her family to respond to the taunting teens and things heated up quickly.
The teens reportedly responded by upping their taunts and began throwing things, so some of the adults ran to sporting goods and brought back weapons. From there the fight kept growing with any manner of shoppers joining in.
The town’s Police Chief, James VanBrederode, later told the media, “It was in total chaos when officers got there, it’s just disgusting to see that kind of behavior happening right here.”
Chief VanBrederode was shocked over the incident especially by the fact that “The adults jumped right in with the kids” during the melee.
But the chief also warned that this is becoming a cultural problem. “People have no respect for other people and these situations are becoming much more common here in Monroe County,” he said.
The chief warned they are reviewing the video to identify fighters and added, “If you’re in that video, you ought to be looking over your shoulder. It’s just a matter of time before we come knocking on some doors.”
Walmart pledged to up its security to prevent such incidents in the future.
