It was double-takes galore when the photo of an arm of a dead man dangling from a vehicle’s trunk on Detroit’s east side made it on social media.

But what was startling to many was heart-wrenching for a father.

“I couldn’t believe it was him, I couldn’t believe it,” Jeff Davis told Fox2 News Detroit. “That’s how I found out, through Facebook.”

That’s how Davis learned of his son’s murder — through a photo posted on Facebook depicting a white Buick Century that was abandoned in a Detroit alley.

After it was shared thousands of times, relatives soon identified the vehicle as one belonging to Davis’ 39-year-old son, Jeff Hagler.

Police found that Hager had been beaten, shot three times and thrown in the trunk of his own car.

“It’s sad to find out your son you’ve just seen – and the next thing you know he is in the back of a car,” Davis told the station.

His body was discovered just 12 hours after the two celebrated Father’s Day together.

Although Hagar got involved with drugs while in his 20s, he’d led a pretty quiet life since.

When Davis was asked what his son was doing in the area, he said, “someone said he got a phone call from a girl. And that was the last of that.”

Anyone with information about the homicide is urged to contact Detroit police at (313) 596-5200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
