California Democrats want to get rid of superdelegates

The California Democratic Party is pushing for a major overhaul to the Democratic primary process.

A resolution approved Sunday urges the Democratic National Committee to eliminate caucuses and the majority of superdelegates, The Los Angeles Times first reported.

“It’s very exciting and healing for our party to be able to make a strong statement that we believe in democracy and that leaders should never trump the will of the voters,” Christine Pelosi, the daughter of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and a superdelegate for the state, told the publication.

The push largely comes from Sen. Bernie Sanders’ supporters, despite the candidate announcing he would no longer lobby superdelegates for the party nomination.

Sanders said he would like to see the primary process left up to independent voters, not just Democrats, The Wall Street Journal reports.

If the California Democratic Party is successful in its plea, the changes would be made by 2020.
