To show just how much people do care when they become aware of another’s heartbreaking loss, a whole plane full of passengers were moved to comfort a grandmother who lost her grandson in last weekend’s terrorist attack at an Orlando nightclub.
As the Daily Mail reports, after Luis Omar Ocasio-Capo lost his life on Sunday his grandmother began her flight to Orlando to gather with family to mourn his loss. But when passengers found out why the elderly woman was on the flight their compassion welled.
JetBlue employees were aware of the woman’s journey and set about to make her trip as comfortable as possible, but flight attendant Kelly Davis Karas had the idea of sending a piece of paper down the aisles for passengers to write a note of condolence to the woman for her terrible loss.
Karas wrote about the overwhelming response in a heartfelt Facebook post about the woman’s trip to Orlando that has now gone viral.
“She was understandably distraught,” the flight attendant wrote about the victim’s grandmother, “but met us with kindness and gentleness. And gratitude.”
Karas noted that when she first started sending the paper around she expected people to write maybe a few words and then add a signature. But she was soon alerted by another flight attendant to get more paper. “I think you should start another paper from the front. Folks are writing PARAGRAPHS,” Karas said a colleague told her.
“When we gathered them together to present them to her, we didn’t just have a sheet of paper covered in names, which is what I had envisioned,” Karas reported.
“Instead, we had page after page after page after page of long messages offering condolences, peace, love and support. There were even a couple of cash donations, and more than a few tears.”
As the plane landed and passengers began to leave the cabin, Karas found nearly every passenger taking a few seconds to say something kind to the elderly woman bringing tears to the eyes of many.
“In spite of a few hateful, broken human beings in this world who can all too easily legally get their hands on mass assault weapons – people ARE kind. People DO care,” Karas said.
