Mike Rowe unleashed his brand of common-sensed wisdom on a man who scolded the TV star for not explaining the details of the Orlando shooting to a 10-year-old boy.
Rowe took to Facebook to say he was watching the unfolding news on a flight out of Baltimore, when he was asked questions by a curious young passenger.
“There’s a kid sitting next to me – maybe ten years old – trying to get his head around the details of what’s happened,” Rowe wrote. “He has many questions, and because he’s seen me on television, he thinks I have the answers.”
Rowe went on to explain he did the best he could, taking a lesson from his mother who would quote the old childhood television favorite, Mr. Rogers, during difficult times.
“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”
That answer didn’t sit well with at least one man named Stan, who was clearly — and rightfully — enraged by news of the attack. Stan wanted to know why Rowe wasn’t more up front with the child.
“Why would you not tell this little boy the truth? Islam is a terror group that was given safe haven in our country by the current administration. They are here to kill you,” Stan wrote.
Stan again asked Rowe why he didn’t alert the boy to the “truth.” And while the disgruntled man had a point, Rowe came back with what many perceived as a better one.
“Because he’s ten, Stan. And he’s on plane for the first time. And because I’m not his dad,” Rowe replied.
For the most part, Rowe received widespread accolades for his Mr. Roger’s response, and for good reason.
Perhaps we should let children have their childhoods before the age of innocence is lost forever.
