Only an hour after President Barack Obama made a glowing endorsement of Hillary Clinton to be the next president of the United States, the White House for the first time called the investigation into her illicit email scandal a “criminal investigation.” Naturally Republicans lighted on the reference with delight.

During a White House press conference not long after the President released a video of his endorsement of Hillary, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest characterized the investigation as a “criminal” examination of Hillary’s breaking of the country’s national security laws.

As Obama mouthpiece Earnest was discussing how the President intended to let the investigators do their job without his interference, Earnest said, “That’s what their responsibility is. And that’s why the president, when discussing this issue in each stage, has reiterated his commitment to this principle that any criminal investigation should be conducted independent of any sort of political interference.”

Many assumed that Earnest spoke out of hand and did not intend to specifically say that the investigation into Hillary’s illegal use of private email while she was Obama’s Secretary of State was a “criminal” matter, but according to the Daily Mail a search of all the discussion of Hillary’s email problems revealed that the word “criminal” was never added to the explanation.

Certainly Republicans loved the reference.

Republican National Committee spokesman Michael Short insisted “the White House’s admission that the FBI is investigating Hillary Clinton’s email server as a ‘criminal’ matter shreds her dishonest claim that it is a routine ‘security inquiry.'”

“This is another reminder of her reckless conduct as Obama’s secretary of state, where her attempt to skirt government transparency laws exposed highly classified information and put our national security at risk,” Short added.

GOP Chairman Reince Priebus also Tweeted out the White House Press Sec’s claim noting that Earnest “admitted” that the probe was criminal in nature.

Clinton has been all over the map in response to the investigation as to whether or not she broke the nation’s security laws by illegally sending top secret information over her unsecure, private email server hidden away from government watchdogs, investigators and the American people in her own home in New York.

Initially, Hillary insisted that she neither sent nor received any secret information over her server. As CNSNews reported in August of last 2015, Clinton insisted, “I never sent classified material on my email and I never received any that was marked classified.”

Worse, even as the investigation began it was learned Hillary deleted some 32,000 emails from her easily hackable server, 32,000 emails that investigators were never even able to look at to see if they contained any top secret material.

And as the investigation continued, it became clear that Hillary sent thousands of emails containing sensitive and secret information that if ending up in enemy hands through a hack of her server would have compromised U.S. security.

So far investigators have discovered at least 2,079 messages with classified info in them sent by and to Clinton on her private, unsecure email server.

Despite this fact, though, Hillary insists that she “absolutely” will face no criminal indictment.

Has Obama assured her that he will quash any final determination that would hold her accountable for violating the nation’s security? We can only guess.
