Donald Trump is gearing up for the general election by hiring key staff for campaign positions.
The presumptive Republican nominee brought in Jim Murphy as his new national political director, the New York Times reported Sunday. The two spoke by phone over the weekend.
Murphy is the head of JLM Consulting and was a senior adviser to Bob Dole’s presidential campaigns in 1988 and 1996. He was also president of a public affairs firm, DCI Group, and managed floor operations at three Republican conventions.
The addition of Murphy to the campaign comes just after Rick Wiley, who previously held the position, was fired over a week ago. Wiley had been in place less than two months.
Trump’s campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, who also hired Wiley, helped bring Murphy on board.
As Trump’s campaign sets its sights on the general election, Murphy’s hire is an attempt to beef up the communications team that had only campaign spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, overseeing communications, according to the Times.
Murphy’s start in politics was working for New Hampshire’s GOP Senator Gordon J. Humphrey, and also as deputy political director at the National Republican Senatorial Committee in the mid-1980s.
