The death toll rose from an overturned Army truck in rising Texas floodwaters as more bodies were found.
The recovery of the four soldiers’ bodies brought the death toll to nine following the devastating accident in Fort Hood on Thursday.
After the truck carrying twelve soldiers overturned in the rain-swollen Owl Creek, three soldiers were rescued while five were found dead. Four others who were swept away were missing as the Army and other civilian agencies used ground, air and dog teams to find them, CNN reported.
“It was a situation where the rain had come and the water was rising quickly,” said Christopher Haug, a spokesman for the Army post. “They regularly pass through these weather conditions like this. This was a tactical vehicle, and at the time they were in proper place. Just an unfortunate accident that occurred quickly.”
Maj. Gen. John Uberti told reporters, “In this incident, we’ve lost nine soldiers.”
It was a tragic week for the military as Thursday saw the crash of a Navy Blue Angels F/A-18 Hornet which claimed the life of its pilot who is being praised for his act of courage in the tragedy.
On the same day, an Air Force elite Thunderbird F-16 crashed following a fly-over for the Air Force Academy’s graduation ceremony in Colorado Springs, Colo. The pilot was able to bail out safely, however.
