A California third-grader stood his ground and refused to remove his favorite hat when school officials ordered him to do so.

3rdGraderThe hat in question was a red Donald Trump “Make America Great Again” cap which nine year-old Logan Autry proudly wore to his Fresno school, WTVR reported.

Autry was told by the Powers-Ginsburg Elementary School principal on Thursday to remove the hat because it upset other children.

“They told me to take my hat off because it brings negative emotions to the other children who don’t like him,” Autry said, referring to Trump. School officials cited safety concerns after other students confronted the boy, according to WTVR.

“They were saying they didn’t like Trump, they were saying he was stupid,” Autry said. “I had to explain to them what Donald Trump was actually doing.”

Autry had to leave school early on Thursday after he refused to remove his hat, WTVR reported.

“I still said ‘no I am not taking it off’ and I said ‘no,'” he said. “Then the principal told me to take it off but I still said no.”

Autry’s uncle Zacc thought it was unfair. “They should be able to let kids freely express themselves without the fear of being beat up or harassed or bullied,” he said.

Autry was able to shake the presumptive Republican nominee’s hand and get the hat signed when he attended Trump’s Fresno rally on May 27. “He supports Trump even at his age,” his uncle said. “He knows a lot about politics.”

“This is my favorite hat,” Autry had responded to school officials. “The First Amendment says I can wear my hat.”

In a statement, the school district said:

“Our job as educators is to facilitate a safe learning environment where we encourage robust conversations of diverse and thoughts. We are proud that in this case, our school achieved that goal by allowing the student to wear his hat for several days. However, it is also our responsibility to take precautions when the discourse begins to impact our school climate and interrupt school operations.”
