Despite dying her hair pink, tattooing her face and wearing blue contact lenses, a Southern California woman nonetheless couldn’t escape the long arm of the law after killing a popular drum teacher in a hit-and-run accident.
Police caught up with Tracy Clapp, 36, who has an extensive criminal history, after they were alerted by neighbors of her whereabouts.
The Register reported:
On Saturday night she was traced to an area of southeast Santa Ana, where police saw her exit a house and get into a stolen car. They tried to pull her over, [Santa Ana Cpl. Matt] Wharton said, but she kept going. She fled on foot but officers confronted her and took her into custody after a scuffle and a police canine bit her arm.
Clapp reportedly ran a red light and struck Christopher Chavez, 26, of Santa Ana as he was walking across the street on April 20 at about 2:15 a.m., according to The Orange County Register.
She then stopped her black BMW sedan, walked up to the victim before turning heel and driving off, witnesses said.
Chavez was taken to Orange County Medical Center where he was eventually declared brain dead. He was a drum line instructor at a local high school, and was studying to become an emergency medical technician.
One of those witnesses photographed Clapp before she sped from the scene. Her photo was circulated along with appeals from Chaves family members and the police, who offered a $20,000 reward, resulting in tips pouring in.
The Register reported:
Clapp was in the hospital recovering from the tussle with officers and a police dog bite, and was expected to be booked on Sunday night on suspicion of several crimes stemming from both the hit and run and the struggle with authorities, including vehicular manslaughter, felony hit and run and assault on a police officer.
“I feel nothing for this lady right now,” Ralph Chavez, Christopher’s father said.
He said that although he’s relieved that Clapp was captured, it also renews the pain of losing his son.
“It brings back much sadness for Chris … She’s a bad woman,” he said. “We are a broken family right now.”
Although tips from the public are what led to Clapp’s arrest, no one has claimed the $20,000 reward.
“There is no one interested in the reward at this time. They were just interested in leading us to her.”
