A family outing to the Cincinnati Zoo Saturday turned into a deadly nightmare when a four-year-old boy accidentally fell into a gorilla habitat after sneaking under the fence surrounding the pit.

One of the zoo-goers captured video of the boy and gorilla.

Around 4:00 p.m. local time, the boy managed to slip away unnoticed from his mother and siblings with a desire to get a better look at the 17-year-old, 400-pound male lowland gorilla, according to local NBC affiliate WLWT Channel 5 News.

Then the boy fell 10 to 12 feet into the pit, landing in a moat.

It took about 10 minutes for the zoo’s dangerous animal response team to get to the gorilla habitat and shoot the animal.

The Cincinnati Fire Department was also notified and reported that the gorilla “was violently dragging and throwing the child,” according to its records.

Zoo officials indicate that the lad was between the animal’s legs when it was finally brought down.

“It’s a sad day all around,” zoo director Thayne Maynard said. “They made a tough choice and they made the right choice, because they saved that little boy’s life. It could have been very bad.”

Tranquilizer wasn’t used in this instance because when an animal is agitated, as this one was, it has little effect.

The name of the boy, who was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, hasn’t been released, and the hospital hasn’t released any information on his condition.
