It was supposed to have been a joke.
An amendment offered in the Louisiana legislature that would have capped the age and weight of stripper backfired.
At issue was a Senate bill that would have prohibited strip clubs that serve alcohol from hiring dancers under the age of 21.
As a joke, Rep. Kenneth Havard offered his amendment “as part of keeping, I guess, the spirit alive of trimming the fat.”
The proposed amendment would restrict strippers to be “between twenty-one and twenty-eight years of age and shall be no more than one hundred and sixty pounds in weight.”
Although laughter could be heard throughout the chamber, not everyone was amused.
“Are you saying that women over 28 or over a certain weight are not fit to be dancers or strippers?” asked Rep. Nancy Landry.
“No ma’am, I’m just worried about their health and I wouldn’t want them to hurt one another,” Havard replied to still more laughter.
After Landry said she found “the amendment offensive,” Havard withdrew it. Both Havard and Landry are Republicans.
Afterwards, Havard referred to his amendment as satire, adding that he wasn’t about to apologize for it.
“It’s regretful that some people got offended by it, but I don’t think I will apologize for being politically incorrect,” he told local ABC affiliate WBRZ Channel 2 News.
“We have bigger issues to deal with rather than some of these feel-good issues,” Havard said. “I don’t think the stripper bill will help human trafficking at all. It’s just another form of overregulation.”
