EgyptAir reported that its flight 804 from Paris to Cairo vanished from radar as it was entering Egyptian airspace, but while still over the Mediterranean Sea.

The aircraft was flying at an altitude of 37,000 feet when it disappeared, along with 56 passengers and 10 crew members. The airline reported that the passengers included:

The aircraft was cruising at the time of its disappearance — the safest part of any flight’s journey, according to CNN aviation correspondent Richard Quest.

“Planes just do not fall out of the sky for no reason, particularly at 37,000 feet,” he said.

The Egyptian Navy, with help from Greece, has deployed ships and aircraft to search for the aircraft — the first priority.

ABC News reported:

“Find the plane, find the people, see if there are folks that could be rescued,” said David Soucie, a CNN aviation safety analyst.

“Safety people are looking at safety issues, maintenance people looking at maintenance issues, security people looking at security issues.”

As the aircraft, an Airbus A320, crossed over the Mediterranean Sea, weather conditions were clear, according to CNN meteorologist Pedram Javaheri.

“The area in question in the eastern Mediterranean is currently under clear skies, but computer models suggest a storm system may impact the region as early as Friday afternoon,” he said.

“Once the plane reached the Adriatic Sea, several hours into its journey, clouds were beginning to clear and it remained that way for at least another 1-2 hours before the plane’s final known location.”

The airline reported that both the flight’s pilot and first officer were seasoned veterans.

Airbus, the aircraft’s manufacturer, tweeted:

“We are tracking reports of missing #EgyptAir flight #MS804, and our thoughts are with the relatives of passengers at this time,” The U.S. Embassy in Cairo tweeted.
