Support for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump soared to a new level according to a national poll.
The GOP front-runner’s support among Republicans is at 56 percent, more than double that of rival Sen.Ted Cruz, who has 22 percent according to an NBC News SurveyMonkey poll released Tuesday, Politico reported.
John Kasich scored only 14 percent support, with 58 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning voters calling on the Ohio governor to drop out of the race. While 36 percent thought Cruz should quit his presidential bid, almost 40 percent of those surveyed thought he should continue in the race.
A majority of voters, 67 percent, did not think Trump has the disposition and personality to be a successful president.
But with Trump leading in polls and in votes, many who did not support the billionaire before are now faced with the possibility of him squaring off with Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.
“Weekly Standard” editor Bill Kristol is one who might be re-examining his #NeverTrump stance. Kristol noted on Steve Malzberg’s Newsmax TV show Monday that though he has not been a Trump fan, he believes he should “never say never.”
“There are things Trump could do that would win over some of the doubters,” Kristol said, though he wasn’t sure what things would win him over personally.
“For me it is more of a matter of character, and I don’t know if you can change your character,” he said, “the way he demeans other people.”
I mean, I guess never say never,” Kristol added. “On the one hand, I’ll say #NeverTrump, and on the other hand, I’ll say never say never. I’ll leave it ambiguous.”
