Do as I say, not as I do.
Michelle Obama’s answer to a question about her favorite food may have confused some school children.
The First Lady has dictated children’s food choices in school as part of her 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, pushing for more whole grains, fruits and vegetables while removing other “unhealthy” options.
But at the annual “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day” at the White House on Wednesday, Obama’s response to a 12-year-old boy’s question about her favorite food was not what was expected.
“Hands down, pizza. Pizza! Don’t you all agree?” Obama asked, as the children responded with cheers.
“Pizza is the ultimate food because it can be a junk food, it can be healthy, like almost every Friday, I’ll eat like a veggie pizza on wheat — now that may not be something you like, but I like it. You can have dessert pizza, you can do anything with pizza. It’s a very versatile, universally loved food,” she said, apparently preaching to the choir.
“And I like french fries,” she added.
Fries and the “universally loved” pizza may not be on the school menu for many children who have documented their unhappiness in #ThanksMichelleObama postings, and the irony of Obama’s reply was not lost on others on social media.
See a sampling of Twitter reactions and a video of Obama’s meeting with children. The favorite food response is at the 34:46 mark.
