Long time journalist, consumer advocate, and television personality John Stossel has lung cancer.
FOX Business Network’s resident libertarian made the announcement via an opinion post on Wednesday, along with a troubling observation of his care.
Stossel was adamant that he fully trusts the doctors and nurses with his medical needs, but he also wrote that the customer service has a lot to be desired. It’s a big deal, and here’s why…
Doctors keep me waiting for hours, and no one bothers to call or email to say, “I’m running late.” Few doctors give out their email address. Patients can’t communicate using modern technology.
I get X-rays, EKG tests, echocardiograms, blood tests. Are all needed? I doubt it. But no one discusses that with me or mentions the cost. Why would they? The patient rarely pays directly.
Government or insurance companies pay.
And therein lies the problem.
Today’s hospitals, Stossel said, are run like socialist bureaucracies – rarely ever having to answer directly to consumers.
Whenever there’s a mistake, politicians impose new rules: the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act paperwork, patient rights regulations, new layers of bureaucracy…
Stossel points out that the threat of looming lawsuits also weighs heavily on stressed workers who opt to follow rigid rules in place of common sense.
Of course, consumers need only look at the corrupt, pathetic, and perpetually inept Veterans Affairs system to know where the private sector is quickly headed – and Stossel pointed that out too.
Stossel at least, remains upbeat about his prognosis. Doctors say the cancer was caught early, and he is expected to make a full recovery.
We are happy to hear it and wish him well.
